Dad's 91st Birthday!

My dad turned 91 today, October 22nd!  What a milestone to reach.  So, to help celebrate his day, I created this Birthday card for him.  On the inside of the card, there is a funny little quote "It's Important to Have Twinkle in your Wrinkle"!

On the front of the card, the quote reads "Nothing is so strong as Gentleness, Nothing so gentle as real strength".  I entered this card in Crop Chocolate's weekly challenge. This week's Challenge,  Challenge#36 "Neutrals & Brights", was to use one neutral color (black, white, kraft, etc.) in combination with three bright colors. Products Used: Crop Chocolate- Authentique Essentials Patterned Paper, Kraft CS, BG Opaline Pearls, MME Bohemia Transparency, MME Bohemia "Gentleness" Quote. Non-CC- Tissue Tape by Tim Holtz, Stamp by Anna Griffin, Ink by Memento, MME Blue Chipboard "Star".

Back in The Saddle, Again!

So, time flies when you're having fun, or something like that!  It has been just about 3 months to the day since my last post.  During this time, I have had several items occur which has put me in a creative funk.  The major event was a total knee replacement surgery which I had done on my left knee.  The surgery took place on July 30th.  I was in the hospital for several days, before being transferred to a rehabilitation care facility.  There I stayed for 2 weeks while learning how to walk again with my new implant. It just happened to coinside with most of the Summer Olympics in London, England, and I watched several hours of coverage that I normally would have missed. I also discovered some new events like Trampoline and men's & women's water polo! Pretty exciting stuff!  Unfortunately on the morning of my surgery, I had to put my only cat Ziggy to sleep.  We had recently discovered cancer throughout her poor little body, and it was the only thing I could humanely do for her. In hindsight, I realized that little trauma kind of kept my mind from stewing on the surgery which I was about to have that same morning...

After my release from the rehabilitation care facility, I finally made it back home to my parent's house.  And began the journey of learning to manuever around the house and the outside world with the use of a cane. I am not so much using the cane anymore, so progress has been made in that area.

Then, around the third week of September, I flew out to Denver, CO for a visit with some good friends whom I haven't seen in quite a long time in Fort Collins, CO. My good friend David flew me out for about a 10 day visit. What can I say? I'm one lucky girl. I really enjoyed myself, and it made me realize just how much I miss living out there. In fact the picture below is of a card which I made for my friend David.

So, now I am trying to get back into the groove here in Ohio, and finding it harder than I would have thought.  But appointments need to be made, commitments met, etc. I guess I just find myself daydreaming of the mountains and the western life which I miss so much, that it makes it hard to be very productive. The card which I made (above) reflects some of that beautiful country out there. I used foil gilding to reflect the beautiful, golden Aspen trees which were in peak color in the mountains, along with the various colors of the willow, mountain maple and other low-lying shrubbery that reflected more of a reddish color. The stylized maple leaf die cut in the center of the card represents the foliage in the lower elevations which had not turned into its fall colors yet. And at the very bottom right of the card, in black print are the words "thank you".

Well, that was a very quick and brief overview of why I have been absent for the last three months. I will try to push myself and make a better attempt to post things more frequently now that I am back home!

CC Challenge #20: Print it Up! With StampersBest Stamps

For the CropChoc. #20 Challenge, the rules were to: Create a project using black or dark background with 3 different patterns & a ribbon.  I also added a StampersBest Stamp to this challenge.

My parent's 50th Anniversary was July 4th!  WOW! I cannot believe it has been that long already! To help them celebrate, I made this card for them.

The picture on the front is of them cutting their wedding cake!  (Colors appear lighter in the photo than they are IRL!)  Products Used: BG Little Black Dress for all the plain and patterned papers, BG Cardstock "frame", the word "Bliss" from HC. Non CC: Flower from Webster's, Ribbon from Anna Griffin, Nestabilities Die.

This is the front view of the card:

And this is a view of the inside of the card:

On the inside I used two separate stamps. The first one, the quote, is called "Love Bench Sentiment" Rubber Stamp, and can be found on StampersBest.com!  The second stamp is an Anna Griffin stamp that wishes a Happy Anniversary!

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed your visit!

Blog Hop "For Those Who are Left Behind"

Welcome to this Blog Hop! The deadline for the Blog Hop will be 9am MST Thursday July 5th. So, you have until then to visit as many of the blogs as you can.

The title of this Hop, "For Those Who are Left Behind", was decided on by a group of gals over at CropChocolate.com, a wonderful.online scrapbook store. Crop Chocolate, is having an onsite crop retreat called "The Spring Thing" in the State of Utah. However, I was unable to attend this year, and so while the lucky ones are in Utah, some of us who couldn't make it decided to have a Blog Hop so that we could get our "scrappy on" also.

Each stop along this blog hop will have a  "Challenge" posted. The challenges are created by the blog's author, and you need to follow each blogger's instructions to qualify for some goodies being given away by CropChocolate.com. In addition, some of the Bloggers will be giving out "Blog Candy" on their Site. Just be sure to follow their individual instructions in order to qualify yourself for winning! Here is a list of the participating blogs. Visit them in order, or randomly as you find the time!

I am giving away a very nice package for you stampers out there! And all I ask you to do is to become a follower of my blog (unless you already are), and to leave a comment at the end of this Post. I will determine who all followed those requirements, and then will randomly draw a winner from that group! I'm really hoping I can increase the number of followers I currently have, 33, to 50! So, good luck to all, and now on to my Challenge:

For my Challenge, I'm asking people to use their Alcohol Inks on a project of their choice. Use one or two colors, or as many as you like. You can use the inks on a card, a layout, a home decor item, or whatever your imagination comes up with! In order to give some inspiration, I am Posting a Tutorial I made using Alcohol Inks and a Candle!

Alcohol Inked Candle Project
1.      Supplies needed:
Tim Holtz Adirondack Alcohol Inks of your color choice (by Ranger)
-White or Neutral color Pillar Candle(s)
-Disposable Gloves
-Masking Tape
-Non-Stick Protective Craft Mat (15”x18” Inkssentials by Ranger)
-Old Newspapers
-Waxed Paper OR Palette Paper
-Paper Plate
-Cotton Balls or something similar (I used the cotton from a prescription bottle!)
-Mini Mister filled with Ranger Blending Solution (OPTIONAL).

Cover work surface with a layer or two of Newspapers. Place “Protective Craft Mat” on top of Newspapers (if you do not have a Protective Craft Mat, just add another layer or two of Newspapers). Place a sheet or two of Palette Paper(PP) OR Waxed Paper(WP) on top of your Previous Layers. Cut the PP or WP so that it is long enough to “roll” your Pillar Candle back and forth on. Usually about 12” is a good length.
2..      Cut a small piece of masking tape and wrap it around the Candle wick. This will protect it from getting stains on the white wick of the candle, and also give you a “handle” to rotate your candle with.

             3.    Now put the Disposable Gloves on.
             4.    Pick out the “lightest” color of your Alcohol Inks, or the color you want to serve as a “base    color” for your project.
             5.   Lightly squeeze a trail of this color onto the sheet of Waxed Paper.
Begin rolling your Pillar Candle back and forth through this color, until your Candle has a nice coating of this color on all sides.

                    6.  Now Stand Candle upright on a clear spot of your Waxed Paper. Squirt a little of same color on the top of the Candle, and use the Cotton to spread and cover this area of the Candle so the entire Candle is now the same color
                    7.  Pick a different color and begin “dripping” from the top edge of candle, letting the Ink drip and pool and form its own patterns. Drip the Ink all around the candle from the top edge, and completing a “circle” back to the starting point. It is helpful to hold the wick while turning the candle, as you will not leave any fingerprints in the ink and you can see the coverage you are getting from your second ink color.
8.      Repeat with as few or many ink colors as you choose. This is where color patterns really begin to show themselves. Just remember to completely circle the Candle with your Ink as you are dripping it down. That way the Candle does not have any “empty” spots

                        9.   When you have finished with your Inks, place Candle onto a paper plate to dry.
Dry for about 24 hours If you want, embellish your candle with ribbon, charms, etc.. After 24 hours, all the alcohol has evaporated and you are free to burn and enjoy the Candle! Below are photos of the Candle, Embellished.

Notes:
-Colors used on this project are: Sail Boat Blue; Wild Plum; Purple Twilight; Sunshine Yellow. For the base color on this project, I used the “Sail Boat Blue”. I did NOT use the Mini Mister for this candle.
-After you have made a Candle and are feeling comfortable with the process, try making a second candle. For this candle, you can turn it up a notch by using a “Mini Mister” filled with Alcohol Blending Solution, and spray the Solution on various parts of the Inked Candle. This will give you a look similar to the effect you get if you ever used salt on watercolor paints.  The Blending Solution will spread the color and somewhat “lift” some of the color if you have a spot that has too much color or is too dense.
-Below are pictures of a Candle made using “The Alcohol Blending Solution” Technique.

I hope you have enjoyed using your Alcohol Inks to make a unique and beautiful candle. Just remember, you decide when you are finished. If you are happy with how your candle looks after using two colors, then you are finished. If you want to add more colors, then do that. Just be careful and look all around the candle as you add each color. You do not want to add TOO much, or you may end up with a “muddy” look. Most importantly, Have FUN!!

CC Challenge #18 "The Recipe" Using StampersBest Stamps

Where has the month of June gone?  In just a few days it will be Father's Day.  So, I finally "got my craft on", and came up with this card to celebrate his special day:

The Swordfish Stamp is from StampersBest. (At stampersbest.com, If you use the Code CharB during checkout, you will save 10% off your Order!!)  I first stamped it with black ink, then embossed it twice with clear embossing powder to give it that just out of the water "wet look". Unfortunately, the picture doesn't show that detail very well. It does show up better if you click on the picture and enlarge it. The patterned paper is from MME Union Square line, the metal corners from Tim Holtz, and the pearls are from MM Bravissimo.

On the inside of the card I used another StampersBest Stamp, The Fishing Lesson,  for this humorous quote:

I hope my dad enjoys his Card, and has a wonderful Father's Day!!

I would also like to enter this card in the following challenges:

Anniversary Shadowbox

This project is a Shadowbox I created for my sister and BIL's 27th Anniversary. They have been through a lot recently, and I wanted to make something special for them.

I began by "fussy cutting" along the damask shapes to create a "frame" for their photo. I also fussy cut from another sheet of the same patterned paper, along the damask patterns from the top to bottom of the sheet. I then cut them further to fit around the framed area. Next, I took a piece of lace and hand pleated it, using Glossy Accents to secure each pleat! After creating the pleated lace, I attached it around the cut-out frame using the Glossy Accents, then attached a strand of pearls over the "seam" of the pleated lace. Then I placed the picture of my sister and BIL behind all this and secured with adhesive.
The Bravissimo I used was three separate pieces. The "Happy Anniversary" used on the top of the page is actually a "center" sentiment piece. In the lower right corner I took a Bravissimo semi-finished teal rosette, and used a sentiment center "It's Your Day" on top of that. To beef the rosette up, I attached some box-pleat ribbon around the bottom of the entire rosette.
Near the top of the page, on either side of the frame, I placed the dates of their marriage and the date of their anniversary using MM Paper Reverie silver letters, on top of two Spellbinders cut-outs. At the bottom of the frame I attached a TH metal flower and pearl bangle. I added two Anna Griffin butterflies and added some stickles, along with MM Paper Reverie Noir butterflies and some Prima Pearls! After I was completely finished, I enclosed the layout in a shadowbox frame, and called it done!! Everything used was from either OMC or CC, except for the following: shadowbox, TH Pearl Bauble, Anna Griffin Butterfly(2), misc. lace and pearl strand for "frame" (stash), Spellbinders die, Glossy Accents adhesive, and stickles-Crystal.

I would like to enter this project into the following challenges:

CC Challenge #15 - Homemade

The requirements for this week's challenge was to "Create a project using something that you've made yourself, rather than buying from a store (ie: Twine, Washi Tape). Make sure to include 3 different colors in the project." On this card, the "something homemade" includes two items. The ivory lace flower, and the pearl center used on the flower. The pearl center is a new technique I learned. It is actually created with 6 small pearls of the same color, one larger pearl of a contrasting color, and strands of "mini" pearls (3mm) that you can cut to your desired length. These mini pearls should be a color that contrasts with the 6 small pearls. To see a video on how to create these go HERE . One thing that I did that was different from the tutorial, was I used "Glossy Accents" instead of a glue gun. The jury's still out on which method is better.

For the card, I also used Spellbinder's Nestabilities Labels Twenty-Five with some black cardstock to "frame" the word "Giggle", along with some pop-dots to give it some dimension. On that frame, I added a Tim Holtz metal LEAF, along with some of his tissue tape across the bottom of the card. I finished it up using 3 of the MM Bravissimio pearls along the upper left side, and finally adding the "smile..." in silver Thickers, which connects to a quote on the inside of the card!
I really liked how the colors of the subtle old rose pattern in the background paper lent itself to a more "old-fashioned" look, complimented by the white color of  the Giggle phrase, the 3 pearls, the ivory homemade flower, and the metallic leaf. While the dimension of the pearl center added some different color interest, along with a smooth, tactile feel, to the card.

I would also like to enter this card into the following challenges:

CC Challenge # 14- Blue and Brown

The Instructions for this challenge were to Create a project (LO, card, home decor - anything goes!) using blue and brown as your main colors.  For this card, I decided to try something called "Iris Folding". The word which is kind of covered up by the date stamp is "Perspective".

Project made with MME Paris & Co. Paper, including the four different patterns (7 strips of each) that make up the Iris Folding in the center. Flowers made from Paris & Co. Paper. Also used Bravissimio Pearls, glimmer mist,Viper adhesive. Non CC used: Spellbinders Dies for flowers, Prima Pearls, Glimmer Mist, Anna Griffin Template, JoAnn's Embossing Powder.

The Iris Paper Folding is designed to give an outcome with the appearance of a camera shutter lens. The papers are cut to @ 6" in length, about 1" wide.  Next each paper strip is scored lengthwise down the middle and folded. After this step is finished, place each patterned paper in separate piles, to keep them in order.  Using the reusable template, you begin  to lay the papers in a pattern, overlaying each strip according to the template. When you have finished this, you will notice that a pattern has emerged, with each pattern paper making up a "sub-pattern".  Next, you cut out a shape to your liking out of a different sheet of paper, and this will serve as the front of the card, with the Iris Folding appearing in the center of your cut out shape.

I then created the three flowers from a Spellbinders die, and adhered them in the upper corner of the card, and further embellished the card with some Prima pearls, and a short quote "it's all perspective". The quote is kind of a play on the shutter lens shape of the Iris paper folding in the center of the card!  If you have any questions about this technique, feel free to leave a comment with your contact info. and I will get back to you! Thanks for stopping by!

The Paper Girls Challenge

Now, I know it isn't Christmas time, or even close to Christmas in July, and so you are probably wondering why these pictures are posted here at this time.  There is a contest going on over on "The Paper Girls Challenge", and one way to "gain" an extra chance at winning the Contest Prize is by posting a link to your blog where you have posted an ATC you made. An ATC is an "Artist Trading Card". Think of it as a  baseball card for Crafters. They are created to the same dimension of a baseball card, by individual crafters, and traded or "swapped" between said crafters!  And here are two Christmas-themed ATC's which I created, and thought I would post for this contest :)

CC Challenge #9: The Man Project Using StampersBest Stamps

This weeks challenge,  The Man Project:, Requirement is to make a masculine project that must incorporate something that is transparent, clear or a glossy element.  When I heard what this week's challenge was, I knew what the perfect project for this would be-A Birthday Card for my brother. His birthday is on April 4th, and I need to get this in the mail ASAP!! Of course, I just finished making the card this morning! Nothing like being behind and waiting for the last minute :)

The glossy element is the Mailman Stamp, by StampersBest Stamps, which is covered in Glossy Accents. But you really cannot tell that from the photo! I also made him stand out by using 3-D adhesive to attach.

A View of the inside of the Card.

The Hand-Writing Stamp is also from StampersBest.

Blog Hop Winner :)

What a fun Blog Hop! And so many inspiring projects by the participants! I know that there was a lot of work put into the Hop, both by the bloggers and the organizers.  But before I can call this Hop DONE, I have a little "housekeeping" to tend to.

First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to comment on my NEW blog :)  And to those who are now following my blog, I will try not to disappoint! Thanks Central and Mommyx2 for all the work you put into organizing the blog hop!

Now onto the fun news! I have a winner for my "blog candy". My parents drew numbers between 1-46 (the # of comments), and then took the average of those two numbers. The winning number was #25 and that makes "SharonDB" the winner!! Sharon, if you see this, please send me a PM or e-mail with your contact info so I can get your package in the mail. :)
Thanks!

CC Challenge #8: Packing A Punch

This week's CropChocolate.com Challenge #8 required you to use packaging from a CropCchocolate.com order to create a component or element on a project. I had spent so much time learning how to make a blog, and set things up for the Blog Hop, that I only had a little time tonight to create something before the deadline at midnight! So, I created a quick little card for the challenge. This is it:
I created the blue flower from some brown packing paper and Tim Holtz Distress Stain in Tumbled Glass. I then used a Spellbinders Die to cut the shape, and then "rolled" the Die Cut to create the Flower shape :)  Other products I used included MME "A Beautiful Life" PP, MM Paper Reverie "Metallique" Gems & Brads, Butterflies and Journaling Book, White Cardstock, Tim Holtz Stamp, & StazOn Timber Brown Ink.

Whew!! Just got this one in under the wire! :)

Webster's Pages Contest

http://vimeo.com/mynoveltree/websterspagesnowshipping

Valentine's Day Shadowbox

This is a project I created for my mom. I started out with a plain white, heart-shaped box and from there I covered the outside and "bottom" of box with paper from the MME Lush2 Line. The blue and white checked flowers I created using the same Line of Patterened Paper. The stylized "S", which I created in coordinating jewels stands for my mom's first name, Sally. The photo in the box is from my mom's Engagement Photos, which she had taken while engaged to my dad! Other Miscellaneous items I used include a cotton doily, dangling clear gems, and two cream-colored roses from MM.
